🌞 Big, Tough & Easy to Grow
Prickly pear cactus is tough, drought tolerant, and wonderfully low maintenance once established.
These extra-large pads give you a substantial start and can be grown in the ground or in a large sunny container.
🌱 Quick Planting & Care
- Allow the freshly cut end to callus before planting
- Use cactus/succulent mix or another fast-draining soil
- Plant the bottom of the pad approximately 1–2 inches deep
- Give it plenty of bright light
- Acclimate gradually when moving into strong direct sun
- Water sparingly and allow the soil to dry between waterings
- Reduce watering during cooler months
🍴 More Than Just a Pretty Cactus
Prickly pear is famous for its edible young pads (nopales) and colorful fruit (tunas).
The fruit can be enjoyed fresh or used in jams, syrups, and drinks, while young pads are traditionally prepared in a variety of dishes.
Its flowers are also popular with pollinators, making prickly pear a beautiful and useful addition to a water-wise garden.
🌵 Grown in Southern California
Our prickly pear started from just a handful of pads about 8 years ago and now grows throughout The Dog and Crow Co. here in Southern California’s Inland Empire.
These aren't warehouse plants — we harvest our pads from the cactus we grow ourselves.
